In a landmark move to promote golf in Northeast India, the Indian Golf Union (IGU) has unveiled plans to organize the region’s first-ever Golf League, aimed at nurturing grassroots talent and integrating the Northeast into India’s broader golfing ecosystem.
The announcement was made during a press conference at the Guwahati Press Club, following a pivotal meeting between the IGU and representatives from six Northeastern states to discuss long-term strategies for the sport’s development in the region.
Addressing the media, IGU Director General & CEO Bibhuti Bhusan and Secretary Shashank Sandu emphasized the crucial role of national federations in shaping sports in India. “Just as the BCCI governs cricket, the IGU is the apex body for golf in India,” they noted. Highlighting the Northeast’s rich sporting heritage, they expressed confidence that the region—home to numerous Olympians and outstanding athletes—will now make a significant mark in Indian golf.
The IGU outlined a comprehensive plan to develop golf in the Northeast. The first step involves conducting a regional golf tour to identify promising talent at the grassroots level. A Northeast Coordination Committee will also be established to assist states in formulating development plans and ensure seamless collaboration across the region.
Another key focus will be the creation of a rules clinic to train and certify referees from the Northeast, strengthening the region’s officiating standards. In addition, the IGU will appoint a dedicated coach for the entire Northeast, fully funded by the federation, to mentor aspiring golfers.
To further enhance training facilities, the IGU will provide the Northeast with a full swing kit launch monitor, an advanced training device used by elite golfers. Remarkably, only eight such units exist in India, and one will be exclusively allocated to the region to support serious golfers under the guidance of the appointed coach.
In a major boost for competitive golf, the Government of India is planning to launch the Northeast Golf League (NEGL), modeled on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The league is expected to feature four to six teams, with team owners, player auctions, and a franchise-based structure. A similar model has already been successfully implemented in Mumbai, laying the groundwork for the Northeast.
The IGU has invited regional sponsors and stakeholders to actively participate in the league, emphasizing that this initiative will not only elevate the profile of golf but also create fresh opportunities for players, coaches, and sports entrepreneurs across the Northeast.
The press conference, attended by IGU Secretary Shashank Sandu, Director General & CEO Bibhuti Bhusan, and Treasurer Sanjeev Rattan, marked a historic milestone in the journey of golf development in Northeast India. With this visionary initiative, the region is poised to emerge as a vibrant hub for golf, nurturing talent and shaping the future of the sport in the country.
