Ganja Worth Rs 1.63 Crore Seized in Joint Operation in Sonamura

In a major anti-narcotics operation, security forces and police seized a massive consignment of 327.700 kg of dry ganja, valued at approximately Rs 1.63 crore, from the Kamalnagar Krishnadola area of Sonamura in the early hours of Wednesday.

The operation was jointly conducted by Sonamura Police, the 81st Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) and the 11th Battalion of Tripura State Rifles (TSR), following specific intelligence inputs regarding the suspected storage of contraband in the area.

According to police sources, the joint team launched a search operation between 12:30 am and 5 am. During the extensive search, personnel recovered seven plastic drums containing a total of 327.700 kg of dry ganja.

The estimated market value of the seized narcotics stands at Rs 1,63,85,000, making it a significant recovery in the ongoing efforts to curb the illegal drug trade in the state.

Following the seizure, the contraband was taken into custody after the completion of necessary legal formalities. As the person responsible for storing the consignment could not be identified at the time of the operation, the seized ganja was recorded as unclaimed.

Sonamura Police Station has initiated an investigation to trace the ownership of the narcotics and identify those involved in storing the consignment. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the recovery to determine whether the seizure is linked to a wider network involved in the illegal trade or transportation of narcotic substances.

The successful joint operation underscores the coordinated efforts of Tripura Police, the BSF and the TSR in tackling drug-related activities and strengthening enforcement against the illegal storage and movement of narcotics.

Further investigation is underway, and police are working to identify those responsible for the consignment.
