In a late-night operation on Wednesday late night, Tripura Police arrested a man and recovered a factory-made pistol, 14 live cartridges and several firearm-related accessories from his residence at Bhagalpur village in West Tripura, near the international border.
The arrested person, Santosh Biswas, reportedly works as a daily wage labourer.
Confirming the recovery, N. Gopal Deb, Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station, said police acted on a tip-off regarding the alleged possession of contraband items at Biswas’s house.
Following the information, a police team reached the spot, cordoned off the residence in the presence of witnesses and conducted a thorough search.
“During the search, we did not find the suspected contraband items. However, we recovered a factory-made pistol, 14 live rounds of ammunition, a magazine, a pistol pouch and oil used for cleaning the firearm, along with other related materials,” Deb said.
The police seized all the recovered items and arrested Biswas. A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Arms Act, while a forensic team was called in to examine the seized materials.
The officer further stated that Biswas has no previous criminal record registered at Airport Police Station.
As the residence is situated close to the international border, investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and ammunition. Police are also trying to ascertain the source of the weapon and determine whether the recovery has any connection to other illegal activities.
The investigation is currently underway, and further details are expected to emerge as the police proceed with the case.
