A tragic accident in Fatikroy, Unakoti Tripura, claimed the life of a five-year-old child on Wednesday evening, leaving his family and the local community in deep shock.
The incident occurred in Ward No. 5 of Radhanagar Gram Panchayat, where a mud wall of a kitchen belonging to local resident Nibas Malakar suddenly collapsed. At the time of the incident, his two children were inside and became trapped under the debris.
Family members and neighbors rushed to rescue the children and immediately took them to Fatikroy Primary Health Centre. However, doctors declared the younger child, Ankush Malakar (5), dead upon arrival. His brother, Ayush Malakar, who sustained serious injuries, was given initial treatment before being referred to Kailashahar District Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and devastating. The children’s mother and grandmother were reportedly left speechless by the shock. The atmosphere at the hospital turned heavy with grief as news of Ankush’s death spread, with the mother breaking down in tears.
Police from Fatikroy Police Station reached the hospital soon after being informed. The child’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination and is expected to be handed over to the family afterward.
The Malakar family, already struggling with financial hardship, now faces an uncertain future. Local residents pointed out that continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days has made mud houses in rural areas extremely vulnerable to such accidents.
Area MLA and minister Sudhangshu Das expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a social media post, he stated that he was deeply saddened by the death of the young child caused by the collapse of a mud wall due to incessant rains. He also prayed for strength for the bereaved family and for the eternal peace of the child’s soul.
The incident has cast a pall of mourning over the entire locality, raising concerns about the safety of mud houses during prolonged spells of rain.
