In a significant move towards enhancing regional connectivity, a high-level team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), led by M. Rajkishore, Regional Executive Director (RED) for the Northeast, conducted a visit to the long-defunct Kailashahar Airport in Unakoti district on Monday.
The purpose of the visit was to assess existing infrastructure and examine the feasibility of reviving operations at the dormant facility.
Speaking to reporters after the inspection, Rajkishore stated, “My team and I have come to Kailashahar Airport to assess the basic infrastructure in place. Alongside officials from the Tripura government, we have conducted preliminary observations. We are seriously considering the development of Kailashahar Airport and are currently evaluating the types of operations that could be viable here in the future.”
The delegation included key figures such as K.C. Meena, Director of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, Agartala; L. Darlong, Additional District Magistrate of Unakoti; Pradip Sarkar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kailashahar; and other senior administrative officials.
The initiative has also found strong political backing. Veteran Congress MLA Birajit Sinha has consistently raised the matter in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, urging the government to expedite efforts to revive the airport and restart commercial flight services for the region.
