An elderly woman from Kaliram Para, a locality Sonamura Sub-division of Sepahijala district, has alleged that her electricity bill has skyrocketed to ₹9,821 following the installation of a smart meter. The complaint was raised by local resident Naithakti Jamatia.
According to the elderly woman, she has been using electricity normally for years, and her monthly bills typically ranged between ₹100 and ₹200. However, after a smart meter was recently installed at her residence, she was shocked to receive an electricity bill amounting to ₹9,821, leaving her distressed and helpless.
She stated that it is practically impossible for her to pay such a huge amount. Naithakti Jamatia further alleged that she had never received such a high electricity bill before the installation of the smart meter, raising doubts about the meter reading or billing calculation.
The elderly woman has appealed to the Electricity Department and the concerned administration to investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action.
The incident has triggered anger and concern among local residents as well. They fear that if abnormal electricity bills continue to be generated after the installation of smart meters, it will become extremely difficult for ordinary people to bear the financial burden.
