Sonamura Police, in a joint operation with the 81st Battalion of the BSF and the 11th Battalion of TSR, arrested a drug peddler and seized cannabis worth around ₹15 lakh in the Batadhula area of Sepahijala district.
Officer-in-Charge of Sonamura Police Station, Tapas Das, informed that the team recovered 102 kg of dried ganja from the accused’s possession during the late-night operation.
The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Mostafa (29), a resident of Kamalnagar Krishna Dula under Sonamura Police Station. He was caught while allegedly attempting to smuggle the contraband across the Batadhula border into Bangladesh.
“During interrogation, Mostafa admitted that he and his associates had planned to smuggle the consignment into Bangladesh. The estimated market value of the seized ganja is approximately ₹15.30 lakh,” Das said.
Police have registered a case under the NDPS Act at Sonamura Police Station. Investigators suspect the involvement of a larger network and expect more arrests in the coming days.
The accused will be produced before the Court today, where police will seek his remand for further investigation.
