Expressing dissatisfaction with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Tripura government to investigate the death of former DGP Anurag Dhankar, the CPI(M) on Monday approached Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, demanding a probe supervised by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, accompanied by eight CPI(M) MLAs, met the Governor and submitted a memorandum, raising concerns over the ongoing investigation. The party claimed that doubts over the circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death have been expressed by the public, members of his family, and several officials.

Chaudhury alleged that the government’s decision to hand over the investigation to West Tripura District SP Namit Pathak had raised questions about the impartiality of the probe. He argued that a case involving the state’s top police officer requires an independent investigation under judicial supervision to ensure transparency and credibility.

“The circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death have created many questions. People and his family members want a fair investigation. We believe the probe should be conducted under the guidance of a sitting High Court judge so that the truth comes out without any influence,” Chaudhury said.

The CPI(M) leader added that the Governor heard their concerns and assured them that the matter would be examined. He also said the party was not satisfied with the SIT, as it felt an officer from within the police department might not be able to conduct a completely independent investigation.

Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, along with senior CPI(M) leaders, also met the Governor and submitted a separate memorandum. Describing Dhankar as an honest and dedicated police officer, Sarkar said the incident had shocked many and demanded a transparent inquiry.

Sarkar questioned the formation of the SIT under the leadership of the West Tripura SP, stating that the government should have opted for an independent mechanism to establish the facts. He alleged that the delay in involving a judicial authority had created doubts among people and urged the Governor to ensure the participation of the High Court in the investigation process.
