A family in Kalachhari area under Manu Police Station in Sakram has alleged that their residence was attacked and vandalised by neighbours following a long-standing boundary dispute. The family has also alleged physical assault and death threats, triggering tension in the area.

According to the complaint, neighbours Biswajit Debnath and his brother Apu Debnath allegedly arrived at the residence of Mrinal Sen in an intoxicated condition on Independence Day night. The two allegedly damaged the gate and other parts of the house before entering the premises and assaulting and misbehaving with family members.

The family has further alleged that the accused threatened to kill them in broad daylight and claimed that their political connections would prevent anyone from taking action against them.

At the time of the incident, Mrinal Sen’s daughter, Dr Parmita Sen, was in Kolkata in connection with her work. Concerned about the safety of her parents and brother, she appealed to Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha through social media late at night, seeking immediate intervention and protection for her family.

Dr Parmita Sen also sought a proper investigation into the incident and strict action against those responsible.

Her mother, Geeta Sen, also shared details of the incident on social media. She alleged that the two brothers had been harassing and attacking the family for a long time. She further claimed that Biswajit Debnath had assaulted her nearly a year ago when she was alone at home.

According to Geeta Sen, the two brothers allegedly returned to the house on Saturday night and damaged the gate before entering the premises. They allegedly assaulted and harassed her, her husband and their son. She also alleged that her clothes were pulled, her spectacles were damaged and her necklace was torn during the incident.

A written complaint has reportedly been lodged at the police station against Biswajit Debnath and Apu Debnath. Meanwhile, the accused side has also reportedly approached the police with a counter-complaint.

On Sunday morning, a delegation led by former MLA Prabhat Chowdhury visited the affected family and spoke to them about the incident. The delegation assured the family of support.

The incident has also raised questions over security arrangements as the Kalachhari police outpost is reportedly located not far from the residence.

Police action based on the complaints and the outcome of the investigation are now being closely watched by the family and local residents.
