The Assam government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of cultural icon and celebrated singer Zubeen Garg.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, after chairing a high-level meeting with the Director General of Police, senior CID officials, and the Chief Secretary on Wednesday, announced that the SIT would include some of the “best officers of Assam Police” and function with complete autonomy and professionalism.
Reassuring the public, the Chief Minister said, “No stone will be left unturned in this investigation. The SIT will work independently and ensure full transparency.”
The SIT will be headed by Special DGP (CID) M.P. Gupta, with Rosie Kalita, SSP (CM Vigilance), designated as the Chief Investigating Officer. The team also includes Additional SPs, Deputy SPs, Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors from CID and other districts, all of whom will remain on the case until its completion.
The investigation will focus on CID Police Station Case No. 18/2025, registered under Sections 61(2)/105/106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Officials confirmed that viscera samples of the late singer will be sent to the Central Forensic Laboratory (CFL), New Delhi, for advanced forensic testing.
The formation of the SIT comes amid widespread grief and speculation over Garg’s sudden demise. Fans and cultural bodies across Assam have been demanding a thorough and impartial probe. Assam Police, in a statement, assured that the officers chosen for the SIT were carefully selected and will pursue the case with diligence until its logical conclusion.
Zubeen Garg, revered not only for his music but also as an actor, composer, and cultural ambassador of Assam, leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the state’s cultural landscape. The SIT probe, closely monitored by the public, is expected to provide clarity and ensure accountability in the wake of his untimely death.
