The Central Guwahati Police District has imposed strict restrictions on public gatherings, protests, and noise-making activities within a 5-km radius of Raj Bhawan, the official residence of the Governor of Assam, citing security and safety concerns, officials said on Friday.
The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Amitabh Basumatary, APS, took immediate effect and will remain in force for the next two months.
Authorities stated that the directive aims to maintain peace and preserve the sanctity of the high-security zone surrounding Raj Bhawan. “Raj Bhawan is the official residence of the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, a location of utmost importance requiring heightened security and a calm environment for the smooth functioning of essential government duties,” the order said.
Under the new restrictions, all forms of public gatherings, including rallies, demonstrations, and protests, are prohibited within the restricted area. The use of loudspeakers, fireworks, crackers, or any noise-producing devices is also banned to ensure a disturbance-free environment.
Additionally, unauthorised vehicular or pedestrian movement in the zone is barred without prior approval from competent authorities. Any construction or activity that could disrupt public peace or pose a security risk is also restricted.
The police have warned that strict penal action will be taken against violators. “Any contravention will attract action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) Act,” the order stated.
Officials said the preventive measure is intended to prevent disturbances in the vicinity of Raj Bhawan, which often sees public rallies and protests over political and social issues. Security personnel will remain on heightened alert to enforce the order over the next two months.
