A four-member delegation from AIIMS New Delhi, led by its Director Professor (Dr.) M. Srinivas, concluded a three-day visit to Tripura to assess the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
The delegation is set to submit a comprehensive report to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, outlining recommendations for strengthening the health system, including training programs for doctors, nurses, and lab technicians.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Prof. (Dr.) Srinivas lauded the existing infrastructure in Tripura and acknowledged the state government’s proactive approach in seeking expert collaboration to further enhance its medical services.
“The Tripura government has sought AIIMS' cooperation to upgrade healthcare services. We will provide necessary guidance and support to improve medical education and infrastructure at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital,” he stated.
The AIIMS team, which arrived on June 7, held detailed discussions with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, focusing on expanding health services and education across major government medical institutions, including AGMC, GBP, TMC, and IGM Hospitals.
The delegation also interacted directly with healthcare professionals and patients to gain first-hand insights.
Prof. (Dr.) Srinivas emphasized the significance of this collaboration. “The Chief Minister shared the state’s vision for healthcare advancement. We discussed a wide range of issues—from infrastructure upgrades and health education to service delivery and super-specialty care. Based on our assessment, a detailed report will be submitted to the Centre, following which a targeted action plan will be drawn up. AIIMS will also facilitate training sessions to strengthen the capacities of healthcare personnel in the state.”
AIIMS delegation member Dr. Ramesh Agarwal highlighted Tripura’s commendable health indicators. “The state’s infant mortality rate is lower than the national average—a remarkable achievement. With a Chief Minister who is also a doctor, Tripura is uniquely positioned to lead healthcare reform in the region,” he said.
Dr. Agarwal reaffirmed AIIMS’ commitment to supporting Tripura’s healthcare development. “We have discussed various aspects of the state’s healthcare system with top officials and will extend all possible support moving forward.”
The press conference was attended by key dignitaries including Dr. Laxmitej Undavalli and Dr. Aruna Kumari from the AIIMS delegation, Director of Health Dr. Tapan Majumder, GBP Hospital Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, and AGMC Principal Prof. (Dr.) Anup Saha.
