Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital has successfully carried out its eighth and ninth kidney transplant surgeries on consecutive days, marking another milestone in the state's growing renal transplant programme.

The achievement has been made possible through the initiative of Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and the collaborative efforts of the Nephrology Department of AGMC & GBP Hospital and a team of kidney transplant specialists from Shija Hospitals & Research Institute, Manipur.

The eighth kidney transplant was performed on July 14 on a 22-year-old patient from Chailengta in Dhalai district, with his 45-year-old mother donating one of her kidneys. Both the donor and recipient are reported to be stable and recovering well under medical supervision.

The ninth transplant was successfully conducted on July 15 on a 23-year-old patient from Padmanagar, Bishramganj in Sepahijala district. In this case as well, the patient's 45-year-old mother donated her kidney. Both are said to be in stable condition following the surgery.

The transplant surgeries were led by AGMC & GBP Hospital's nephrology team, including Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das and Dr. Udayan Saha. The urology team comprised Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh and Dr. Jiban Debnath, while anaesthesia support was provided by Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar and Dr. Tapan Debbarma.

The Shija Hospitals team included consultant urologist and transplant surgeon Dr. Paonam Samarendra Singh, Dr. Maharabam Mahale, consultant anaesthesiologist Dr. Taijam Kennedy Singh, and DNB anaesthesiologist Dr. Shreya Kumar Dubey.

Nursing officers, floor nurses and operation theatre technicians from both institutions jointly participated in the surgeries, which were supervised by senior nursing officers Tapati Chakraborty and Sanjib Kumar Das.

Each transplant procedure began at 9 a.m. and concluded at 3 p.m., lasting approximately six hours.

Hospital authorities stated that all kidney transplants are carried out only after obtaining approval from the authorised committee and following mandatory compatibility tests and other medical evaluations in accordance with established guidelines.

With these two latest procedures, AGMC & GBP Hospital has now successfully completed nine kidney transplants, all of which have been provided free of cost. The Tripura Government also bears the travel expenses of the specialist transplant team from Shija Hospitals, Manipur, facilitating the state's kidney transplant programme.
