Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has written to Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, urging immediate administrative intervention to facilitate the restoration of the demolished statue of former Deputy Chief Minister Baidyanath Majumdar to its original location in Kailashahar without any hindrance.
In his letter, Chaudhury described the incident as “shameful and painful,” seeking the Chief Minister’s prompt response.
“You must already be aware that late last Friday (April 11, 2025), a statue of Lord Ram was installed at the Srirampur Tri-junction of Chandipur RD Block in Kailashahar Subdivision, replacing the broken altar where a statue of Baidyanath Majumdar once stood,” he wrote.
Chaudhury pointed out that in 2012, local residents had collectively installed a full-length statue of Majumdar, widely respected as a senior political figure in Tripura. However, in March 2018, shortly after the Assembly elections, miscreants allegedly vandalized the statue and threw it into the nearby Manu River.
“Upon learning of the incident, the then Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb expressed his sorrow and encouraged well-wishers to reinstall the statue at the same location,” Chaudhury recalled.
He further noted that efforts were being made by locals to install a new statue, but in the intervening time, a statue of Lord Ram was suddenly placed at the site during the night of April 11.
“The entire state is shocked and saddened by this unexpected development, which is clearly at odds with the cultural harmony and traditions of Tripura,” he stated.
Chaudhury appealed for measures to prevent such “negative tendencies” and called for a non-partisan, administrative initiative to restore the statue of Baidyanath Majumdar to its original place.
“I urge you to ensure the administration cooperates fully in restoring the statue of this respected public leader without any obstruction. At the same time, suitable arrangements should be made to install the statue of Lord Ram at an appropriate location, with the dignity it deserves,” the letter concluded.
