In a significant step towards sustainable development, Tripura is set to establish its first Solar Village in Rangachhara, a village under the Mohanpur Sub-division in West Tripura district.
Announcing the initiative, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that Rangachhara will be the first village in the state to be entirely powered by solar energy, with 600 families set to benefit from the green energy transition.
"Rangachhara has around 600 households, and we aim to bring all of them under the solar energy net. While every house already has an electric connection, we are now adding solar connectivity, which will drastically cut down on electricity bills. We plan to generate 60 kilowatts of power from this initiative, which will be routed to the state government," said Nath.
He further clarified that the residents will not have to bear any financial burden for the transition. “Not a single rupee will be taken from the villagers. The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) has already installed solar pumps and a water treatment plant in the village,” the Minister added.
Once completed, the central government is expected to formally declare Rangachhara as a Solar Gram, marking a milestone in Tripura’s journey toward clean and renewable energy.
The Power Minister, who visited Rangachhara today ahead of the festival of lights, said the villagers are eagerly anticipating the completion of the project. “The entire village is preparing for an early Diwali,” he remarked.
Highlighting the state’s broader vision, Nath said that the government has set an ambitious target of installing 50,000 solar plants across Tripura in the current fiscal year. Of these, 12,800 installations have already been completed.
With TREDA leading the charge under the Power Department, Tripura is steadily emerging as a frontrunner in harnessing solar energy for rural transformation.
