A four-year-old female wild elephant was tragically killed by a lightning strike in Dukhipara under the Teliamura sub-division of Khowai district on Friday morning.

The incident occurred around 11 AM during a thunderstorm that lashed the region.

Despite heavy rainfall, elephant volunteers on duty discovered the young elephant's carcass and promptly alerted authorities.

Pranajit Saha, Range Officer of the Mungiakami Range, confirmed the incident. "Our forest personnel and veterinary team reached the site immediately, following standard protocol. A post-mortem was carried out on-site," he said.

Preliminary findings from the veterinary examination indicate that the elephant died due to a lightning strike.

“The necessary formalities have been completed, and the carcass will be disposed of in accordance with forest department guidelines,” the official added.
