19-Year-Old Woman Allegedly Killed by In-Laws Over Wedding Jewelry in Tripura

A tragic incident has shocked the local community after 19-year-old Pooja Debnath reportedly died following alleged torture by her in-laws over a gold ring during her wedding.

According to the complaint lodged by her father at GB Hospital, Pooja was repeatedly harassed by her husband, Rakesh Debnath, and his family for not providing a gold ring at the time of the wedding. He alleged that the in-laws set Pooja on fire and abandoned her outside the house.

Pooja had reportedly sought refuge twice at her parental home but was sent back to her husband's house. The horrific incident came to light after neighbors informed her father late at night. She was first admitted to Radhanagar Hospital, then referred to Bilonia Subdistrict Hospital, followed by Shantirbazar District Hospital, and finally transferred to GB Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Friday.

Her father revealed that Rakesh Debnath, who was also injured while trying to save his wife, is currently undergoing treatment at GB Hospital.

The grieving father has demanded strict action against those responsible for his daughter's death.

Following the autopsy conducted on Saturday, Pooja’s body was handed over to her family in the afternoon. The bereaved family broke down in tears as they received the body.

Police have registered a case, and further investigations are underway to ascertain the details of the incident.
