West Agartala Police have arrested Youth Congress leader Shahajan Islam in connection with a case involving derogatory and obscene comments made against political leaders on social media.

Police sources said he had been absconding for several months before being traced and apprehended.

According to authorities, on June 8, 2025, Shahajan Islam had posted offensive remarks targeting former Tripura Chief Minister and current MP Biplab Kumar Deb, as well as the current Chief Minister, Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha. The posts reportedly included personal attacks against the leaders and critical comments directed at the police administration.

Following the incident, BJP leaders filed a formal complaint, prompting police to register a case. Shahajan Islam reportedly went into hiding after the case was filed. After receiving a tip-off, the police located and arrested him from the Jaynagar area of Agartala.

Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer DP Roy said, “In June 2025, an incident occurred in Santipara where Shahajan Islam made derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and attempted to create unrest. A scuffle had also taken place. Following the complaint by Nagadhiraj Datta, we registered a case. We had previously arrested his father and brother, but Shahajan Islam remained absconding. Based on a tip-off, we traced him to Joypur and have now arrested him. He will be produced before the court. We have also registered another case against him for submitting a fake signature on a bail application.”

Police have confirmed that multiple cases, including charges related to attempt to murder, are pending against the Youth Congress leader. Authorities stated that further legal action will be taken in accordance with the law.
