Tension and shock gripped the Bhabanipur area under Kathalia block after a 23-year-old housewife died from severe burn injuries, allegedly following prolonged domestic abuse. The deceased has been identified as Joyita Sarkar.

Following allegations lodged by the victim’s family, police from Jatrapur Police Station detained her husband Bipad Sarkar, mother-in-law Jhana Sarkar, and father-in-law Parimal Sarkar on Tuesday from their residence in Bhabanipur.

According to family members, Joyita had allegedly been subjected to both physical and mental torture since her marriage. Although her husband worked in Chennai, relatives claimed that he would allegedly abuse her whenever he returned home. The family further alleged that years of domestic conflict and harassment had left the young woman mentally distressed.

Amid the ongoing turmoil, Joyita allegedly attempted suicide by setting herself on fire on Sunday. She was first provided treatment locally before being shifted to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GB Hospital) in critical condition. She succumbed to her injuries at around 9 pm on Monday while undergoing treatment.

The incident has triggered widespread reaction in the locality, with residents expressing grief and concern. Police are also investigating whether there may be any other angle behind the incident.

Sources said Joyita was the mother of two children — a son and a daughter — within five years of marriage. The children are reportedly unaware of their mother’s death and are currently staying with their grandmother.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the Officer-in-Charge of Jatrapur Police Station said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway. The three detained individuals are being questioned, and police are examining all possible aspects related to the incident.

Locals described the tragedy as both rare and heartbreaking for the area.
