A suspected incident involving two young women and a vehicle triggered tension near Agartala’s Heritage Park after their screams reportedly prompted local youths to chase the vehicle on Friday.
According to local sources, the incident began when some youths allegedly heard the women crying out from inside the vehicle. They followed the vehicle and, with the assistance of police, managed to stop it near the rear side of the Purbaasha area.
A local shopkeeper claimed that the occupants of the vehicle were not familiar faces in the locality. There were also allegations that one of the women was being forced into the vehicle. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been established.
Residents said two young men and two young women were inside the vehicle when it was intercepted. Police and administrative personnel reached the spot and detained one of the men for questioning. The other youth reportedly fled from the area.
The vehicle was reportedly seen entering the locality through a lane in Purbaasha before being stopped.
The two women were subsequently taken to East Agartala Police Station, while the detained youth was questioned by police.
Police have not yet established whether the incident involved an attempted abduction or whether there was another explanation for what happened. An investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events and determine the circumstances leading to the confrontation.
