Vanghmun village in Jampui Hill donated 6.12 acres of community land in 2014 for the construction of a Block Level Sports Complex under the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA), but the project has yet to materialise even after more than a decade.
Following a directive from the Director of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of Tripura, the Jampui Hill RD Block identified land for the proposed complex. In response, the Vanghmun Village Council, the Young Mizo Association (YMA) Vanghmun Branch, and the Jampui Orange Growers Co-operative Society jointly donated land—3 acres under Vanghmun Mouja, 2.12 acres under Tlakish Mouja, and 1 acre under Paschim Hmunpui Mouja—within 1 km of the Block Office.
The land was formally transferred to the Youth Affairs & Sports Department through a registered deed on September 30, 2015, and land mutation was completed, placing ownership in the name of the Sports Department.
Site development and levelling were also carried out under MGNREGA.
However, the RGKA scheme was discontinued before the sanctioned ₹1.6 crore (₹80 lakh each for indoor and outdoor facilities) could be utilised, leaving the donated land idle for over a decade.
Residents have expressed concern that valuable reserve land was sacrificed without the promised sports infrastructure being realised. Community leaders are now urging the government to initiate a fresh project to construct an outdoor football ground with artificial turf, a 5,000-seat roofed gallery, proper fencing, and an indoor stadium with facilities for at least two badminton courts.
Recently, the Jampui RD Block submitted a new proposal and estimates for an Indoor Sports Hall and Sports Complex under the PMJVK scheme to the Minority Welfare Department.
Supporting the initiative, Dr. Zairemthiama Pachuau, General Secretary of the Mizo Convention, said the government’s approval and active follow-up with the Central Ministry are crucial for its success. He added that despite strong sports talent in Jampui Hill, lack of infrastructure has hindered progress, and with proper facilities, the region could bring recognition not only to Tripura but to India as well.
