An undertrial prisoner lodged at the Bishalgarh Central Correctional Facility died in unclear circumstances, prompting his family members to demand a detailed investigation into the incident.

The deceased, identified as Pranab Pal, was a resident of Hail Mara area under Camp Bazar in Agartala. He was arrested nearly two months ago from Agartala Railway Station under the NDPS Act after police allegedly recovered bottles of cough syrup from fish cartons in his possession. Following his arrest, he was sent to Bishalgarh Central Correctional Facility.

Family members said they received a call from the jail authorities on Sunday morning informing them that Pranab Pal had passed away and that he was being taken to AGMC and GBP Hospital. Soon after receiving the information, relatives reached the hospital.

A family member claimed that they had met Pranab Pal inside the jail just a few days ago and that he appeared to be in good health. However, they alleged that they were not given any clear information about how his death occurred.

The family further questioned the circumstances after claiming that doctors at GBP Hospital informed them that Pranab Pal was brought to the hospital after his death. They also alleged that different versions were given by jail personnel regarding the timing and manner of his death.

Demanding a transparent probe, the family members urged the authorities to investigate the incident and clarify what happened inside the correctional facility before Pranab Pal’s death. They sought answers regarding the sequence of events leading to the death of the undertrial prisoner.
