A Sessions Court in Kailashahar of Tripura’s Unakoti District, has convicted and sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in a rape case involving a woman with disabilities.

The Additional Sessions Judge, Kailashahar, on June 25, 2026, found the accused, Sankar Das (43) of Gournagar under Kailashahar Police Station limits, guilty under Sections 376(1) and related provisions of the Indian Penal Code. The case arose from Kailashahar Women Police Station Case No. 41/2022, which was later tried as Sessions Trial (T-1) 25/2023.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, with an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment in case of default in payment.

According to the prosecution, the case was initiated following allegations that the victim, a woman with mental and physical disabilities, was sexually assaulted while staying at the residence of a retired government employee, where her sister worked as a domestic helper. It was further alleged that the victim was confined for a period of time and later found to be approximately eight months pregnant. Local residents alerted authorities, after which police rescued the victim and began investigation.

The charge sheet in the case was filed on December 31, 2022, by Woman Sub-Inspector Shibani Debbarma of Kailashahar Women Police Station, who is currently posted at Sonamura Police Station under Sepahijala District.
