In a bid to strengthen traffic management in Agartala before the upcoming Durga Puja, the Tripura Traffic Police has rolled out a fresh initiative aimed at building direct coordination with market committees, traders' associations and various unions.
Tripura Traffic Superintendent of Police Kanta Jangir, speaking on Wednesday, said the Traffic Police will visit different markets and engage with shopkeepers, market associations, unions and other stakeholders to understand the challenges they face and deliberate on measures needed for smoother traffic movement.
The drive commenced at Maharajganj Bazar, one of the city's largest markets. Jangir stated that the Traffic Police will first hear the grievances of traders, shoppers and the general public before outlining the department's expectations and proposed steps.
"Maharajganj is a key market. We have noticed violations of no-entry rules, one-way entry and parking regulations. Illegal parking is another major issue. Large vehicles are often left parked on roads for extended periods, causing problems for pedestrians and shoppers visiting the market," Jangir said.
She emphasised that the goal was not solely to penalise violators but to arrive at solutions through coordination and cooperation among the Traffic Police, traders and other stakeholders.
"We want to work together rather than adopt only a punitive approach. We will discuss the difficulties faced by everyone and find solutions in a coordinated manner," she said.
The Traffic Police intends to expand the initiative to other major markets, motor stands and unions across the city, with discussions centred on identifying local traffic-related issues and developing practical remedies.
Jangir noted that the initiative has been launched especially keeping the upcoming Durga Puja in view, when traffic volume in Agartala is expected to rise sharply. The department also plans to sustain the coordination mechanism beyond the festive season to ensure improved traffic management in the city throughout the year.
