In a significant move to modernize and strengthen the state’s power infrastructure, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has launched an extensive reform program aimed at providing uninterrupted, high-quality electricity services. With the city’s electricity demand rising steadily, improving power supply has become the corporation’s top priority.
As part of this initiative, TSECL has announced major upgrades at three key substations in Agartala. Managing Director of TSECL, Bishwajit Basu, stated that over the past three years, Agartala has experienced an annual electricity load growth of 15–20%. This rising demand has led to voltage fluctuations, frequent transformer failures, and irregular power supply in several areas. The planned substation upgrades aim to address these issues permanently.
At the Pragati Substation, the existing two transformers, each with a capacity of 7.5 MVA (total 15 MVA), will be replaced with two new 16 MVA transformers. This will increase the substation’s total capacity to 32 MVA. Similarly, at the NSRCSC Substation, the current 8 MVA transformer will be replaced with a new 16 MVA transformer.
The Badharghat Stadium Substation will also undergo significant improvements. One of its two existing 7.5 MVA transformers will continue in service, while a new 16 MVA transformer will be added, increasing the total capacity from 15 MVA to 23.5 MVA. Once completed, these upgrades will ensure that Agartala can meet its growing electricity demand while maintaining stable and well-regulated voltage levels.
TSECL has emphasized that these upgrades will not be limited to Agartala alone. Similar initiatives will be gradually rolled out across other districts and towns, with future plans including infrastructure improvements at the sub-division level to ensure a more reliable and uninterrupted power supply.
Tripura’s Power Minister, Ratan Lal Nath, said, “The government is committed to providing every citizen with high-quality, uninterrupted electricity. This reform program is being implemented in a planned and systematic manner to strengthen power management across the state.” He also urged consumers to cooperate with the corporation, reminding them that timely bill payments will make them eligible for a 4% discount.
The Minister further stressed that electricity theft will not be tolerated under any circumstances and requested citizens to report any incidents to the authorities. “With timely bill payments and strict action against electricity theft, we can provide better, uninterrupted, and quality power services throughout Tripura,” he added.
