Tripura Traffic Police is set to intensify enforcement against vehicles fitted with dazzling, modified or unauthorized lighting systems, citing growing concerns over road safety and visibility.
According to the department, a number of vehicles are being fitted with excessively bright headlights, flashing lights and unauthorized multi-coloured lighting, including combinations of red, blue and white. Police said such modifications can create glare for oncoming motorists, reduce visibility and increase the risk of road accidents.
The special drive will target vehicles using high-intensity or improperly modified headlights, unauthorized flashing mechanisms and lighting arrangements that resemble those used by emergency services or law-enforcement vehicles.
Traffic Police said vehicle lighting must comply with the provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. Rule 106 lays down requirements concerning headlamps and their use, while Rule 108 regulates the use of red, white and blue lights on vehicles and places restrictions on their unauthorized installation.
The department has urged vehicle owners and drivers to remove non-compliant lighting systems immediately and ensure that their vehicles meet the requirements of the Motor Vehicles Act and applicable rules.
Police said violators will face legal action during the enforcement drive. Motorists have also been urged to cooperate with the authorities and refrain from using lighting systems that cause glare or hamper the visibility of other road users.
The Traffic Police said the initiative is aimed at promoting safer driving practices and reducing accidents caused by improper or excessive vehicle lighting.
