Tripura recorded an estimated 79 per cent voter turnout by 5 PM in Monday’s Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), State Election Commissioner P.K. Chakraborty said.
Polling was conducted across 44 blocks, with voting taking place at 1,095 polling stations where contests were scheduled. The election area has 1,550 polling stations, while around 9.62 lakh voters are eligible to participate in the elections.
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), 1,623 seats were uncontested in the election.
Chakraborty said 6,628 election-duty personnel, including polling and police personnel, had already cast their votes through the Election Duty Certificate (EDC) system before polling day.
Voting at the polling stations began at 7 AM. Of the approximately 6,68,247 voters assigned to the 1,095 polling stations, nearly 79 per cent had exercised their franchise by 5 PM.
“Polling is still continuing at some polling stations even after 4 PM. We expect the process to conclude shortly, after which the receiving process will begin,” the State Election Commissioner said.
After polling concludes, election teams will return ballot boxes, ballot papers and other election materials to the designated receiving centres under the respective Returning Officers. The final turnout will be calculated after scrutiny of the Returning Officers’ diaries and ballot paper accounts.
While the SEC described the polling as largely peaceful and orderly, a shooting incident was reported outside Warrenbari S.B. School in Gomati district. A candidate and another person accompanying him were reportedly injured in the incident and were taken to hospital. Senior officials, including the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, visited the area following the incident.
The Commission also received three complaints from political parties, primarily alleging that polling agents had either been removed from polling stations or were not permitted to remain inside. Chakraborty said the complaints would be examined after the Commission receives inquiry reports from the concerned authorities.
The SEC expects the remaining polling teams to reach their respective receiving centres by around 10 PM. The Commission will then compile the election data and release the final turnout figure after verification.
