The TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) on Tuesday demanded immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the firing on its candidate and two supporters during the Village Committee elections in Gomati district, giving the Tripura Police and State Election Commission a 24-hour deadline to act.
A delegation led by senior party leader and MLA Ranjit Debbarma met State Election Commission Secretary Anurag Sen and submitted a memorandum seeking urgent action over the incident at Gamaria Village Committee under Matarbari RD Block on Monday.
The delegation included TTAADC Chief Executive Member Runiel Debbarma, District Council Member Suraj Debbarma, MLA Biswajit Kalai and MDC Sujoy Uchoi.
According to the memorandum, TMP candidate Kachindra Reang, 36, and party supporters Naithok Jamatia, 26, and Udairam Reang, 40, were allegedly attacked by armed persons at Wareng Bari Ward No. 2 during polling.
The party alleged that Kachindra sustained a gunshot injury to his abdomen, while Udairam was shot in the leg. Kachindra was later referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala for treatment, with the party claiming that his condition was critical.
The TMP said an FIR had been registered at the concerned police station and urged authorities to arrest the accused without delay.
After meeting the SEC, Debbarma alleged that police had failed to act despite several hours having passed since the incident.
“We have demanded that the accused be arrested within 24 hours. If no action is taken, we will decide our next course of action,” he told reporters.
He further alleged that the party had informed police about persons allegedly involved in the attack but that no arrests had been made so far.
The TMP also sought enhanced security for the injured candidate, his family members, party workers and other candidates in the area. It urged the Election Commission and police to strengthen security arrangements in and around Gamaria VC to prevent any further violence or intimidation following the polling.
The allegations could not be independently verified immediately.
