Reducing road accidents continues to be the primary focus of the Tripura Traffic Department, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag said on Tuesday, highlighting the state’s progress in improving road safety.

Speaking to reporters at a free eye check-up camp organised by the Tripura Traffic Department, the DGP said that the number of road traffic accidents in the state has witnessed a decline, falling from 578 cases in 2024 to 527 in 2025.

He attributed the improvement to the collective efforts of various departments and stakeholders through the “Four Es” strategy — Education, Enforcement, Emergency Care and Engineering. According to him, the coordinated approach has played a crucial role in creating awareness, strengthening enforcement measures and improving overall road safety.

“The main objective of the Traffic Department is to minimise road accidents. Through the Four Es approach, different agencies are working together, and this has helped reduce accident cases in the state,” the DGP said.

The DGP also spoke about a new initiative launched by the Traffic Police under the Community Policing programme ‘Prayas’ to provide free eye examinations for commercial vehicle drivers. Drivers who require spectacles or vision-related assistance will be provided lenses at no cost as part of the initiative.

He said many commercial drivers often find it difficult to visit hospitals due to busy schedules or financial constraints. The programme aims to address these challenges while ensuring that drivers have proper vision, which is essential for safer roads.

Nearly 1,000 commercial drivers took part in Tuesday’s eye check-up camp. The DGP stated that improving drivers’ eye health is an important step towards preventing accidents and enhancing road safety across Tripura.
