The Tripura State Election Commission has intensified preparations for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, with the first high-level review meeting held on Thursday to assess the readiness of the administration and security agencies.
State Election Commissioner P.K. Chakraborty said the elections to the Agartala Municipal Corporation and 20 other urban local bodies will have to be completed before the expiry of the existing bodies’ tenure on December 9.
The meeting was attended by all eight District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police, Additional SPs, the DGP-in-charge, IG (Law and Order) and senior officials from various departments involved in the election process.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Chakraborty said the discussions centred on ensuring that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, peaceful and transparent manner.
According to the State Election Commissioner, officials reviewed the functioning of the election machinery, security arrangements and other logistical requirements ahead of the formal announcement of the poll schedule.
He said several preparatory activities have already been undertaken by the Urban Development Department, including the identification and finalisation of polling stations. The draft publication related to the election process has also been issued, while the final publication is expected on October 15.
The meeting also reviewed the legal and constitutional framework governing ULB elections, along with instructions and circulars issued by the State Election Commission.
Chakraborty said periodic orientation of officials is necessary as personnel handling election duties change over time. The meeting also discussed deadlines and key milestones to ensure that all preparations are completed before the election schedule is formally announced.
