In a move to strengthen noise pollution monitoring and enforcement across Tripura, the Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) will hand over 35 Sound Level Meters to the State Home (Police) Department at a special programme scheduled for October 12 at Pragna Bhawan, Gorkhabasti, Agartala.
The initiative aims to enhance the capacity of police personnel to scientifically measure noise levels and take appropriate action against violations of prescribed limits, particularly during Durga Puja and other public events.
According to an official communication issued by the TSPCB on October 9, the instruments have been procured to strengthen the implementation of the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. The equipment will help police monitor excessive noise generated by loudspeakers, public address systems, vehicular horns, commercial establishments and public gatherings.
Minister Animesh Debbarma will attend the programme as the Chief Guest. Dr. K. Sasikumar, IFS, Chairman of the TSPCB, will deliver a presentation on “Noise Pollution: Its Effects, Control & Regulation,” highlighting the harmful effects of excessive noise and the importance of effective regulatory measures.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Tripura, Manchak Ippar, IPS, and Shantanu, IAS, Principal Secretary of the Department of Science, Technology and Environment, will also attend the programme.
A practical demonstration session will be organised after lunch to familiarise police personnel and other officials with the handling and operation of the devices. Participants will also be sensitised to the legal provisions governing noise pollution.
The initiative is expected to improve enforcement, especially in urban and densely populated areas, and promote greater compliance with permissible noise limits during festivals and other public activities.
