Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has called for an independent, high-level judicial inquiry into the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, saying that the circumstances surrounding the incident require a transparent investigation.
Dhankar was found unconscious inside his chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday morning. He was immediately taken to GB Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed, and police are continuing their investigation.
Following the incident, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and LoP Jitendra Chaudhury visited GB Pant Hospital to pay their respects.
Speaking to the media, Chaudhury described Dhankar as a dedicated and highly respected police officer who had risen through the ranks after beginning his career as a Sub-Divisional Police Officer. He said Dhankar had handled several challenging assignments with professionalism and integrity.
The Opposition leader urged the authorities to preserve the body until Dhankar's son, who is currently in Canada, arrives in Agartala. Stressing the need for transparency, he said the case should be investigated by an independent judicial authority so that all facts surrounding the incident are brought to light.
Chaudhury also expressed concern over the growing pressure faced by senior civil and police officers, alleging that many have been working under increasing stress in recent years. He maintained that the incident should not be viewed as an ordinary case and called for a thorough probe into all possible circumstances.
He further claimed that the episode raises broader questions about the prevailing law-and-order situation in Tripura and the overall sense of security within the state.
Police have not responded to the political allegations made by the Opposition leader. Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and the cause of Dhankar's death will be determined after the completion of the legal and forensic procedures.
