The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), under the chairpersonship of Justice Arindam Lodh, has taken suo motu cognizance of a reported assault on a woman in the Tata Kalibari area under Takarjala Police Station in West Tripura.
Acting on a media report, the Commission observed serious allegations that no FIR had been registered even after more than 72 hours of the incident. The report further pointed to alleged inaction by the Officer-in-Charge of Takarjala Police Station, Rathin Debbarma, along with concerns over the limited response from institutions such as the State Women’s Commission and other human rights bodies.
According to the report, the victim was accused of having an “illicit relationship” and was summoned to a village-level “salishi” meeting, where she was allegedly assaulted. She was initially treated at Bishalgarh District Hospital and later referred to AGMC & GBP Hospital in Agartala due to the severity of her injuries, which required surgery. During treatment, she is said to have identified those involved in the incident.
The report also alleged that the victim’s family faced intimidation from supporters of a political party during hospital visits.
Taking note of the gravity of the matter, the THRC has directed that the newspaper report along with its order be forwarded to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, for a detailed inquiry and comprehensive report.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on July 27, 2026, when the DGP’s findings are expected to be submitted before the Commission.
