Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday highlighted Tripura's traditional musical instrument, the Chongpreng, during the latest edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, praising cultural exponent Surya Kumar Debbarma for his remarkable contribution to preserving and reviving the indigenous art form.

Speaking about India's diverse musical traditions, the Prime Minister described the Chongpreng as a distinctive three-stringed bamboo instrument cherished by Tripura's tribal communities. He said its soothing melody bears a close resemblance to the sound of the Sarod and reflects the rich cultural legacy of the state.

Modi observed that the instrument had gradually faded from public attention, particularly among younger generations. However, he commended Surya Kumar Debbarma for dedicating himself to restoring its popularity and ensuring that the traditional art continues to thrive.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged Debbarma's broader efforts in promoting Kokborok folk songs, Bengali folk music, Baul traditions, and other indigenous musical forms. During the programme, he played a brief recording of the Chongpreng and encouraged people across the country to share information about traditional musical instruments from their respective regions on social media, stressing the importance of preserving India's vibrant cultural diversity.

Responding to the Prime Minister's recognition, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed gratitude for bringing the state's rich cultural heritage to the national spotlight.

In a social media message, Dr. Saha thanked Prime Minister Modi for specially recognising Surya Kumar Debbarma's tireless efforts in preserving and popularising the Chongpreng. He described the bamboo-crafted, three-stringed instrument as an invaluable symbol of Tripura's cultural identity, noting that its melodious sound closely resembles that of the Sarod.

The Chief Minister said that although the instrument had lost prominence over the years, Debbarma's unwavering commitment has inspired renewed interest, especially among the younger generation. He expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Prime Minister for showcasing Tripura's glorious cultural traditions before the entire nation and for encouraging the preservation of India's indigenous musical heritage.
