Tripura Police on Friday night arrested a man with cannabis worth nearly Rs 9 lakh during a checking operation at Dharmanagar railway station in North Tripura district.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Mukulendu Das, regular checking drives are conducted whenever trains depart from Dharmanagar railway station. Acting on a specific tip-off, police reached the station late at night after receiving information about a person allegedly carrying cannabis.
The suspect was detained and questioned by police, during which he reportedly confessed to carrying the contraband. During the search operation, police recovered around 19 kilograms of cannabis from his possession and seized the narcotics.
The accused has been identified as Swapan Nath (35). During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly told investigators that he had collected the cannabis from Mohanpur in West Tripura district before arriving in Dharmanagar.
Police estimated the black market value of the seized cannabis at approximately Rs 9 lakh.
A case has been registered against the accused and further investigation is currently underway.
