Tipra Motha MLA Biswajit Kalai has sought the immediate intervention of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder following the eviction of vegetable vendors from the Nandan Nagar area near Don Bosco School.
In a letter to the Mayor, Kalai expressed serious concern over the eviction drive, stating that the action had affected the livelihoods of several poor and economically vulnerable families. He urged the civic authorities to adopt a humane and lawful approach while enforcing municipal regulations.
The MLA also raised concerns over allegations that individuals other than authorised enforcement personnel were present during the operation. He said the involvement of unauthorised persons in an official eviction drive could create fear and insecurity among the affected vendors and potentially lead to unnecessary social and communal tensions.
Kalai called for an immediate inquiry to establish the circumstances surrounding the eviction and determine whether any unauthorised individuals participated in the operation. He also urged the AMC to identify and verify genuine vendors who were displaced.
Seeking a practical solution, the MLA appealed to the municipal authorities to provide alternative vending spaces or formulate a rehabilitation arrangement to enable the affected vendors to resume their livelihoods. He further requested that coercive action against genuine vendors be avoided until an appropriate rehabilitation mechanism is put in place.
Kalai also proposed a joint meeting involving AMC officials, elected representatives, vendor representatives and other concerned authorities to work out a fair and sustainable solution.
He emphasised that restoring public confidence, protecting the livelihoods of vulnerable citizens and maintaining communal harmony in Nandan Nagar must remain the priority.
The MLA urged Mayor Dipak Majumder to personally intervene in the matter and take urgent steps to address the grievances of the displaced vendors, facilitate their rehabilitation and ensure peace and harmony in the area.
