Shekhar Debbarma, a son of Tripura, has taken charge as the new Director of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala, bringing nearly three decades of experience with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Debbarma joined the AAI in 1995 at Kolkata Airport and subsequently served at several airports, including Delhi, gaining extensive experience in airport administration and operations.
His latest posting at MBB Airport marks a return to a workplace with which he already has a professional association. Debbarma has served at MBB Airport on two earlier occasions.
After assuming charge, Debbarma reportedly expressed happiness at returning to his home state and described the posting as a special moment after years of service at airports across the country.
Among the initiatives he is keen to explore is the introduction of airport announcements in Kokborok, Tripura’s indigenous language. He indicated that the feasibility of including Kokborok in the airport’s public announcement system would be examined alongside the languages currently in use.
If implemented, the initiative could improve accessibility for passengers from different parts of Tripura while giving greater visibility to Kokborok at one of the state’s key public facilities.
With extensive AAI experience and previous familiarity with MBB Airport, Debbarma is set to bring both professional expertise and local understanding to his new role.
