Tripura Police seized contraband worth around Rs 1.26 crore during two separate operations in Agartala and Kumarghat, police said on Friday.
In Agartala, West Agartala Police Station recovered around 193 kg of suspected ganja from a vehicle during a late-night operation in the Colonel Chowmuhani area. The seized cannabis is estimated to be worth nearly Rs 96 lakh.
Police said a night patrol team noticed a suspicious vehicle and signalled the driver to stop. However, the driver allegedly sped away and entered a narrow lane before abandoning the vehicle and escaping.
Police personnel secured the vehicle and informed an Executive Magistrate and forensic team. A subsequent search led to the recovery of several packets containing suspected ganja. The vehicle was also seized, and a case has been registered. Police are conducting searches to trace the absconding driver.
Meanwhile, a joint police operation was conducted at Kumarghat in Unakoti district in connection with the suspected transportation of contraband. Four persons were detained during the operation.
According to police, questioning of the detainees was conducted in the presence of a Magistrate and other officials. Based on information obtained during questioning, police located and searched another vehicle.
The search resulted in the recovery of banned cough syrups valued at around Rs 30 lakh, police said.
The two operations have resulted in the seizure of contraband with a combined estimated value of Rs 1.26 crore. Police said further investigation is underway to establish the source and intended destination of the seized items and identify others involved in the suspected network.
