Tension prevailed in the Beltali area after allegations surfaced that a Hanuman idol was vandalised and a Shani temple was allegedly attacked in the Charipara Sachindralal area of Agartala city.

Protesting the incident, a group of members of the Sanatan community, led by the Dukli block unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), staged a road blockade at Beltali on Sunday.

The protesters alleged that the Hanuman idol in the Charpara Sachindralal area had been damaged and that an attack had also taken place at the Shani temple. They demanded that the damaged Hanuman idol be reinstalled at the earliest.

The protesters also demanded the resignation of Biplab Majumder, head of the Charpara Sachindralal Panchayat, in connection with the incident.

Following information about the road blockade, police personnel reached the spot. The SDPO of Amtali police station, the Officer-in-Charge of AD Nagar police station and other senior police officials intervened and held discussions with the protesters in an effort to restore normalcy.

Following police intervention and talks, the protesters withdrew the road blockade.

Meanwhile, security and police surveillance have been stepped up in the area to prevent any further escalation or untoward incident. Police are also looking into the allegations and taking steps to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the alleged vandalism and attack.
