Gomati District Hospital in Tripura is set to receive major healthcare upgrades, including a cardiac care unit, an MRI facility, and a new 100-bed hospital, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said on Tuesday.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, accompanied by Director of Health Services Dr Debashree Debbarma, visited the hospital to assess the existing facilities and review the progress of ongoing development works. He said the government’s priority is to strengthen healthcare infrastructure at the district level so that patients from Gomati and nearby South Tripura districts do not have to travel to Agartala for advanced treatment.

“Gomati District Hospital caters to around 800 patients daily, including people from the South district. Our aim is to ensure that all essential healthcare services are available here. We have already shifted the trauma centre to a new building and are working to expand diagnostic facilities,” Gitte said.

He informed that while a CT scan facility is already available at the hospital, steps are being taken to reduce delays in ultrasonography services. The government is planning to introduce ultrasound facilities at Community Health Centres and Primary Health Centres and operate services in two shifts where required.

The Health Secretary also announced that a six-bed cardiac care unit has been established at the hospital and is expected to become operational this week. With this facility, heart patients will have access to specialised care locally instead of travelling to Agartala.

He further stated that an MRI machine will soon be installed at Gomati District Hospital under a central government-supported initiative. Tripura is expected to receive three MRI machines through PM funds, with one allocated for the Gomati facility.

Gitte added that the hospital laboratory is currently conducting around 150 different tests, and preparations are underway to introduce biopsy testing services soon. Considering the increasing number of patients visiting the hospital, the state government has also planned the construction of an additional 100-bed hospital, with work expected to begin shortly.

The planned upgrades are aimed at improving medical services and ensuring better access to advanced healthcare facilities for people in southern Tripura.
