The Centre has taken note of the deteriorating condition of the Kamalpur–Khowai stretch of the National Highway, following consistent efforts by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
The 12-kilometre route, which connects parts of Dhalai and Khowai districts, serves as a key alternative road link in the state.
According to an official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), Dr. Saha had written to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on May 10, highlighting the urgent need for repairs on the road.
“In response to the Chief Minister’s letter, the Union Minister, in a communication dated July 22, confirmed that a team from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) had inspected the road between June 23 and 27. The team’s detailed inspection report is expected to be submitted to the Ministry by August 15,” the official said.
Acting on instructions from the Union Minister, the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Dr. Krishna Kumar, is scheduled to visit Tripura on August 10 to review the progress and condition of key highway projects, including the Kamalpur-Khowai stretch.
The CMO official further stated that the Chief Minister has repeatedly raised the issue through both formal channels and direct telephonic conversations with the Union Minister. In a bid to expedite the repair work, Dr. Saha has also directed the state Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary, Kiran Gitte, to maintain close coordination with central agencies.
“The state government is hopeful that the Centre’s intervention will lead to early restoration of this vital road, which plays a critical role in ensuring smooth transportation and economic connectivity in the region,” the official added.
