A 46-year-old construction worker from Jaynagar under Jirania Sub-Division in West Tripura, Nivas Das, has made a remarkable recovery following a highly complex orthopedic procedure at Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital.

The patient suffered a severe leg injury on 16 January after falling from an elevated earthen mound. He sustained multiple fractures in his right knee area, with significant bone damage and exposure. He was rushed to GBP Hospital the same day at 12:46 PM and was initially treated in the trauma unit before being referred to the Orthopedics Department.

On 17 January, doctors performed an emergency stabilization procedure using a steel external fixator to hold the fractured bones in place. Due to the severity of the injury, a major reconstructive surgery was later carried out on 11 February, during which artificial bone implants were inserted. The extensive operation lasted from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Post-surgery, the patient experienced kidney-related complications and was shifted to the Nephrology Department for specialized care. After successful treatment and recovery, he was discharged on 19 February.

During a follow-up visit on 8 March, Dr. Swarojeet Debbarma confirmed that the patient’s condition had improved significantly, with proper bone healing and no signs of infection. Medical experts noted that the procedure was highly challenging and rarely performed due to its complexity.

The surgery was led by orthopedic specialist Dr. Swarojeet Debbarma, along with Dr. Santosh Reang, Dr. Pulak Saha, and Dr. Anindya Debnath. The anesthesia team included Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar and Dr. Asit Bhattacharjee, while the operation theatre support staff included Sani Debnath and Arop Choudhury.

The entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and the patient’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and hospital staff for their dedicated care.

Health department officials have highlighted the case as a successful example of advanced trauma and reconstructive orthopedic care at GBP Hospital.
