Mizoram hosts 41,355 refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur: Report

The Mizoram government has reported that 41,355 refugees are currently residing in the state, prompting active deliberations on their welfare and treatment.

During the Assembly session on Monday, Home Minister K. Sapdanga disclosed that Mizoram is providing shelter to 2,217 refugees from Bangladesh, 2,633 from Manipur, and 33,505 from Myanmar. He emphasized that the central government's refugee fund is categorized as a secret fund, designated mainly for preventive measures, and that its utilization is meticulously documented.

To enhance refugee welfare, the government has constituted a special committee that has convened twice so far. Additionally, a dedicated sub-branch has been established to conduct detailed research on refugee livelihoods and long-term integration strategies.

However, in Champhai district, concerns over the economic activities of refugees have led to local restrictions. During a meeting on March 15, the joint NGO of Farkawn village resolved to prohibit refugees from running businesses in the area. Following this, the Farkawn Village Council, along with various local groups and NGOs, issued a directive mandating all refugee shop owners to liquidate their stocks and cease operations by May 31.

Furthermore, a notice has been issued requiring refugees to obtain prior permission from the Village Level Committee on Myanmar Refugees (VLCMR) before entering the village. This decision has sparked discussions on balancing humanitarian aid with local economic and security concerns.
