The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended a red alert for Tripura until May 1, warning of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds across parts of the state.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Agartala, districts including Khowai district, Tripura, India, West Tripura district, Tripura, India, Sipahijala district, Tripura, India, Gomati district, Tripura, India, and South Tripura district, Tripura, India are likely to receive 7 cm to 20 cm of rainfall at isolated locations between April 29 and April 30.
For the remaining districts, an orange alert remains in place, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at a few isolated spots. The forecast also warns of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 50–60 kmph, which may affect several parts of the state.
The IMD has further stated that the red alert will continue for West Tripura and Sipahijala districts from April 30 to May 1, as intense rainfall is expected to persist there. Other districts will remain under an orange alert during this period.
From May 2 onward, conditions are expected to improve slightly. Sipahijala and South Tripura will remain under an orange alert, while the rest of the state will be downgraded to a yellow alert.
Meanwhile, rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours shows significant variation across districts. North Tripura district, Tripura, India received 37 mm, Unakoti district, Tripura, India recorded 17 mm, and Dhalai district, Tripura, India saw the highest at 99 mm. Other readings include 68.8 mm in Khowai, 91.5 mm in West Tripura, 79.1 mm in Gomati, and 77.0 mm in South Tripura, with Sipahijala reporting the highest rainfall at 145.5 mm.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as continuous rain may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and disrupt normal life. Residents have been advised to stay cautious, particularly during thunderstorms and strong wind conditions.
