A youth was allegedly assaulted in the Sonapur area under Sonamura police station after he reportedly opposed drug smuggling activities along the international border.

The injured youth, identified as Rubel, alleged that he was surrounded and brutally assaulted by Suman Mia, Shahjam and several others after he objected to alleged drug trafficking through the border.

Rubel sustained injuries in the assault. His family has also alleged that the attack could be linked to an incident involving the seizure of drugs in Bangladesh.

Following the incident, members of Rubel’s family lodged a written complaint at Sonamura police station. Acting on the complaint, police have registered a case against six persons.

Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the incident has any connection with drug smuggling and to ascertain the actual reason behind the assault. The role of the accused persons is also being examined as part of the investigation.

The incident has created tension in the Sonapur area, although the situation is reportedly under control. Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and the involvement of the accused would become clear once the investigation is completed.
