A woman was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by a Special NDPS Court in Belonia after being convicted in a case involving the recovery of banned cough syrup in South Tripura.
The conviction came as part of the ongoing efforts under the “Nasha Mukt Tripura Abhiyan” to curb the illegal trade and distribution of narcotic substances across the state.
According to South Tripura District Police, the case dates back to January 4, 2025, when SI Sujit Sarkar of P.R. Bari Police Station, acting on specific information, carried out a search at the residence of Chandi Mala Tripura, wife of late Sailendra Tripura, at Nipendra Nagar under P.R. Bari police station.
During the search, police recovered 75 bottles of banned cough syrup from the premises. Following the recovery, a written complaint was submitted by SI Sujit Sarkar, leading to the registration of P.R. Bari PS Case No. 01/2025 under Sections 21(C), 25, 27-A and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985.
The investigation was conducted by SI Niren Debbarma, Officer-in-Charge of Rangamura Outpost. Police stated that the investigation was completed following all prescribed legal procedures and that the charge sheet was filed within 87 days of the registration of the case.
The case subsequently came up for trial as Special NDPS Case No. 07/2025 before the Special Judge, Belonia, who also serves as the District and Sessions Judge of South Tripura. The trial commenced on May 21, 2025.
After examining the evidence and completing the trial, the court on September 15, 2026, found Chandi Mala Tripura guilty under Section 21(b) of the NDPS Act.
The court sentenced her to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹25,000. In case of failure to pay the fine, she will undergo an additional three months of simple imprisonment.
South Tripura District Police said the conviction underlines its continued drive against the illegal drug trade. The district police also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening enforcement, ensuring timely investigation and effective prosecution of NDPS cases in pursuit of a “Nasha Mukt Tripura.”
