Three Bangladeshi nationals were detained by police in Tripura late on February 15 on suspicion of attempting to cross the border illegally into Bangladesh.
According to officials from Jatrapur Police Station under Sepahijala district, the trio was apprehended near Thindeba Choumuhani in Nidaya at around 11:30 pm following a tip-off. Officer-in-Charge Sriti Kanta Bardhan said local residents first noticed the three individuals moving suspiciously in the area and detained them before alerting the police.
A team led by OC Bardhan, along with personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), reached the spot and took the suspects into custody. During preliminary questioning, the detainees reportedly revealed that they had travelled to different parts of India, particularly Bengaluru, nearly four years ago in search of employment. They were allegedly trying to return to their home country through Tripura when they were intercepted.
Police sources stated that the location where the three were found lies about 500 metres east of the barbed-wire fencing along the international border.
The detained individuals have been identified as Ataul Sheikh, Azizur Sheikh and Swapna Sheikh, all residents of Narail district in Bangladesh. Police said they will be produced before a court with a request for remand following further interrogation.
