The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the recent assault on two on-duty doctors at GB Pant Hospital and has sought detailed enquiry reports from the Director of Health Services and the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura.

The incident occurred on August 4, when a group of individuals reportedly associated with a patient physically assaulted two medical officers while they were attending to their duties within the hospital premises.

In an official order, THRC Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh stated that the Commission views the incident as a serious violation of human rights. "The manhandling of medical officers at their workplace reflects a clear failure on the part of authorities to ensure their safety," the order noted.

The Commission has directed the Director of Health Services to explain why protective measures failed, especially given that adequate security personnel were reportedly present on the hospital premises. A separate notice has also been issued to the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, seeking details of the actions taken against the miscreants and the steps implemented to safeguard medical personnel.

Both officials have been instructed to submit their respective reports to the Commission by August 21.
