The Tripura Government has set September 30, 2026, as the deadline for completing major road maintenance works across the State, with special focus on ensuring smooth connectivity ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festivities.

The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at the War Room of TIFT, Agartala, on August 8. The meeting reviewed the progress of road repair and maintenance works being carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD), NHIDCL and other agencies.

PWD Secretary Kiran Gitte, speaking to reporters on Monday, said the Chief Minister had instructed the departments concerned to accelerate the ongoing works, maintain quality standards and ensure that important roads are made motorable before the festive season.

According to the PWD, maintenance has been targeted on 1,006 roads covering 1,622 km under PWD (R&B), while another 119 roads covering 665 km fall under PWD (PMGSY). Maintenance of 32 roads with a combined length of 377 km under PWD (NH) has also been included in the target. All these works are scheduled to be completed by September 30.

Gitte said a follow-up review was held on August 10 to assess the progress and address bottlenecks affecting the works.

Several important national highway stretches are also undergoing maintenance. These include the Champaknagar–Nalgaria Railway Bridge stretch of NH-08, the Khowai–Agartala section of NH-108B, the Khowai–Kailashahar section of NH-208, and the Churaibari–Agartala stretch of NH-08.

The PWD Secretary said early and prolonged rainfall since March had affected road maintenance activities and contributed to the emergence of potholes at several locations. However, he clarified that adequate funds are available for carrying out the required repairs.

Officials have been directed to give priority to roads linking district and sub-divisional headquarters, bus terminals, railway stations, hospitals and major Durga Puja venues.

Gitte further said Superintending Engineers, Executive Engineers, Assistant Engineers and Junior Engineers would conduct regular field inspections to monitor the quality and pace of the repair works.

The State Government has reiterated its commitment to completing the works within the stipulated deadline and improving road connectivity for residents and visitors during the Durga Puja season.
