Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen (72), who is currently undergoing treatment at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, is reported to be in a stable and improving condition.
According to the latest medical update, Mr. Sen has been breathing on his own without mechanical support and his oxygen levels remain normal.
Mr. Sen was admitted to the hospital on August 11, 2025, under the supervision of Dr. Ravi Gopal Varma, Director and Lead Consultant Neurosurgeon at the hospital’s Global Center for Excellence. Earlier, in Tripura, he underwent a decompressive craniectomy following a left gangliocapsular intracerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain).
He was later transferred to Bengaluru for advanced medical care.
On August 12, doctors performed a right frontal EVD (external ventricular drainage) procedure to remove excess cerebrospinal fluid, followed by a tracheostomy on August 14 to support breathing. Over time, his condition gradually stabilized, and he was shifted to the general ward.
However, on October 2, a CT scan revealed hydrocephalus (accumulation of fluid in the brain) after he showed signs of delayed responsiveness. A programmable ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt was subsequently implanted, and the procedure was successfully completed.
At present, Mr. Sen remains stable in the ward, breathing independently through the tracheostomy. Nutrition is being provided via a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) tube. Doctors have indicated that a cranioplasty—to reconstruct the portion of skull removed during his earlier surgery—will be performed once the custom bone implant arrives.
Following recovery from surgery, Mr. Sen will undergo a comprehensive rehabilitation program combining physiotherapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), and Ayurvedic therapy.
The latest health bulletin, based on a report from Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Nirmala S, and shared by the Tripura Legislative Assembly Secretariat, confirms that Speaker Bishwabandhu Sen’s recovery is progressing steadily under close medical supervision.
